New Distributor, Same Look

Since the beginning of 2024, the e-book version of New Old World has had a new distributor — Draft2Digital (D2D).  This was the result of Smashwords merging with D2D, with Smashwords continuing on as a retail partner only.  While the purchasing process is much the same, I’ve updated and reordered my links in the sidebar to better reflect this change.

I’ve kept my direct links to the most popular platforms, like Apple Books and Amazon Kindle. But I’ve added “Other outlets,” which is a Universal Book Link provided by D2D. There you can see a sampling of the range of retailers that carry New Old World, both in this country and abroad.

When you click on one of these logos, you’ll be doing business with that particular retailer, not with D2D. That means you can be sure that the version you’re ordering will be compatible with your reader. Kindle shows up in the array, even though I created the Kindle version through Amazon and not D2D, so you’ll still be buying directly from Amazon.

Draft2Digital also distributes to libraries and schools via specialized suppliers, but readers need to go through their local libraries to borrow New Old World.  For Portland-area residents, I’ve supplied a link to my book at the Multnomah County Library.

All this streamlining came at a price: my frayed nerves! When the merger happened, I migrated my Smashwords account over to Draft2Digital with some trepidation, worried that my careful formatting of New Old World wouldn’t carry over intact.  It took me all year to find the time and gumption to have a look at the state of my formatting, at which point I learned that D2D had been using the Smashwords version with no changes.  All that worry for nothing!  But in order to update the e-book with the tweaks I wanted to make to the front and back matter, I had to run my edited Word document through Draft2Digital’s “epub” converter. Long story there, but basically it didn’t turn out well, so I made my own epub through a program called Calibre and submitted that.  The happy ending is that the version I have for sale here is the updated one and it looks as good as the old one. Whew!

One thing that was lost in the merger was the author interview I’d created for the Smashwords site, which I discussed in a February 2018 post. Since it’s not available at Smashwords anymore, I’ve decided to preserve “Interview with Myself” on this blog, and it will be appearing soon.

Please note: I’m in the process of doing a third printing of New Old World, so it’s currently unavailable as a traditional printed book, unless I ransack my own shelves for a spare copy!
